How Does It Work?
Database Integration means that some of the content of a web site resides in a database as opposed to HTML pages; when a site visitor accesses a page that is linked to the database, the content is generated on the fly by extracting information out of the database.
The Client can access the database through his/her web browser. User-friendly screens allow addition, modification and deletion of records in the database - this is called the content management system (CMS). The database resides on the web server. You, the client, therefore have control over updating the web site without involving us in the process, as well as without knowledge of HTML.
Who Will This Benefit?
- Anyone who has to do weekly, bi-weekly or monthly updates, or anyone who just wants the convenience that database integration offers to keep site content fresh.
Examples of applications are events, news items, product catalog and employee profiles. The average person can use this system; there is minimal training required, as it is very user friendly and cost effective.
- Anyone who requires users to log into or register on their site.
- Anyone who would like users to enter data remotely.
Platforms Used
There are many tools on the market today that lend themselves to database integration on web sites.
We develop our site using many different techniques and web development tools. One such method is by the use of ASP and SQL. ASP (Active Server Pages) is a development language that allows the web user to see dynamic pages based (usually) on information that they request to see. It is tied into the object model of Microsoft's Visual Basic and therefore (as expected) the ASP language has a similar coding syntax. ASP integrates with databases very well (we currently support both Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server as our preferred database platforms) and allows the developer to manage information from many points of view.

Another one of these dynamic web development tool sets that we employ is that of iHTML. It also is very capable of interacting with MS Access or Microsoft SQL Server databases through SQL statements. "iHTML is a very powerful server side scripting / programming language for the Internet, which allows the creation of customized interactive web sites. iHTML gives you the tools to build dynamic web sites that allow real time interaction between the user and the data being presented. In fact, iHTML Technology was designed to bring the power of some of the web's largest sites to the small developer on a fixed budget." From
